Hugh Gall was a star football player with the University of Toronto Blues from 1908-1912. Known as the best kicking halfback of his day, Gall was an extremely prodigious punter-he could send the ball sailing up to 70 yards with either foot. In the 1909 inaugural Grey Cup final, he not only scored a touchdown but kicked eight single points, a record that has yet to be bettered.

Gall captained the Blues to additional Grey Cup victories in 1910 and 1911. In 1913, he joined Toronto's Parkdale team and helped it reach the Grey Cup finals. In 1914, he led the University of Toronto team to the finals once more, this time as coach.

Gall retired from the field soon after to pursue a career as a mechanical engineer. He remained active in the football world as a game referee and as president of the Canadian Rugby Union. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1963.
