HONOURED MEMBERS - NOMINATION GUIDELINES
(1) Athletes - Any individual athlete or team in amateur or professional sport who has achieved outstanding and extraordinary success in Canada, or as a Canadian competing abroad.
(2) Athlete nominees shall not be considered until after retirement from major championship competition, or following a particularly outstanding athletic achievement that warrants special recognition.
(3) Builders - Any individual who has made an outstanding and extraordinary contribution to amateur or professional sport in Canada other than as a competitor.
(4) Builder nominees may be either active or inactive at the time of their consideration.
(5) Members of the Board of Governors and of the Selection Committee are eligible for election as Honoured Members.
(6) Any nominee who has been considered but not elected by the Selection Committee shall remain eligible for consideration and election at the following two future Selection Committee meetings, and then will be removed from consideration unless nominated again.
(7) There shall be an annual review of Canadians who are World and/or Olympic champions who are not Honoured Members of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
Categories of Members
There shall be two categories in which persons can be elected as an Honoured Member of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame.
(1) Athletes
(a) Individual - a competitor in a solo event(s), or an outstanding individual from a team event.
(b) Team - a team is more than one athlete (such as pairs, relay teams, rowing or sailing crews, or team sports) and as a unit, achieves outstanding accomplishment.
(2) Builders - builders are individuals whose efforts as leaders, administrators, officials, coaches, business leaders, media or in other roles make an outstanding contribution to Canadian sport.
Nomination of Candidates
(1) Nominations for selection may be made by any Canadian or by a Canadian sports or other organization.
(2) Each member of the Selection Committee may not submit more than three new nominations for each election proceedings.
(3) Nominations shall be made in writing to the Secretary and shall contain the fullest possible data concerning the record and the merits of each candidate nominated. A nominations form is available on this site.
(4) Recommendations for nominees may be made by persons other than Committee members by complying with the provisions of the Regulations. However, no such recommendation shall be considered by the Selection Committee unless it is endorsed by at least one member of the Committee and is included as one of his/her personal nominations.
(5) The deadline for nominations in any calendar year shall be January 15th.
(6) By January 31 of that year, the Secretary shall provide each Committee member with a complete list of nominees together with the names of their prospective nominators.
Method of Election
(1) The election of candidates shall take place at least once in each year. Additional elections may be conducted with the approval of the Board of Governors at such place and time as it shall be determined.
(2) The target quota of elected Honoured Members each year shall be up to four to five Athletes and Teams, and one to two Builders, up to a maximum of six inductees per year unless otherwise specified by the Board of Governors.
